Villain) A finely executed late eighteenth or early nineteenth-century French line engraving entitled La Dormeuse, reproducing one of Jean-Baptiste Greuze's celebrated sentimental genre paintings. The engraving was drawn by noted French artist Jean-Baptiste Wicar and completed by engraver G.R.L. Villain, faithfully translating Greuze's richly textured composition into an elegant monochromatic print. Artist Biography Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805) was one of the most celebrated painters of eighteenth-century France. Renowned for his sentimental domestic scenes, portraits, and moralizing genre paintings, Greuze enjoyed enormous popularity before the French Revolution. His works are held in the Louvre, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery, London, and major museums throughout Europe and North America. Jean-Baptiste Wicar (1762–1834) was a distinguished French painter, draftsman, collector, and pupil of Jacques-Louis David. During his career in Paris, Rome, and Naples, Wicar became highly regarded for his refined drawings after Old Master paintings, many of which served as the basis for finely engraved reproductions. His collection ultimately formed the foundation of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille.
