An original nineteenth-century hand-coloured sporting print by renowned British artist Henry Thomas Alken, depicting an animated fox hunting scene as riders attempt to clear a park fence. Typical of Alken's lively compositions, the print captures the excitement and occasional mishaps of the English hunt, with one rider dramatically tumbling over the obstacle while others successfully negotiate the jump. Artist Biography Henry Thomas Alken (1785–1851) was one of Britain's foremost sporting artists and illustrators of the nineteenth century. Best known for his depictions of fox hunting, horse racing, coaching, and country life, Alken produced thousands of drawings and engravings during his prolific career. His illustrations appeared in many of the era's most important sporting publications, including works by Nimrod and other celebrated writers on British field sports. Today, Alken's original hand-coloured aquatints remain highly collectible and are represented in the collections of the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and numerous sporting art collections worldwide.
