A bold original black-and-white wood engraving by celebrated Canadian artist Carl Schaefer, depicting a freshly cut tree stump with exposed roots against a stark wooded landscape. Executed with strong graphic contrasts and expressive carving, the composition demonstrates Schaefer's mastery of relief printmaking and his lifelong fascination with the Canadian rural landscape. Artist Biography Carl Schaefer (1903–1995) was one of Canada's foremost twentieth-century painters and printmakers. Born in Hanover, Ontario, he studied at the Ontario College of Art under J.E.H. MacDonald and became closely associated with the generation that followed the Group of Seven. Best known for his depictions of Ontario farms, villages, forests, and winter landscapes, Schaefer also produced an important body of wood engravings and watercolours. He taught for many years at the Ontario College of Art and represented Canada internationally through numerous exhibitions. His work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Museum London, and many other public institutions.
