Artist: S. C. Shaw (Canadian, active 1940s) Title: Old Mill Road, Rockwood, Ontario Medium: Oil on board Image Size: 7 × 8.5 in. Frame Size: 11 × 13 in. Signature: Au verso & Titled A charming original oil on board depicting the rocky landscape surrounding Old Mill Road in Rockwood, Ontario. Executed in a fresh, impressionistic manner, the composition features rugged limestone outcrops, coniferous trees, and a winding country road, capturing the distinctive scenery of the Rockwood Conservation Area. Artist Biography S. C. Shaw was an Ontario landscape painter active during the early 1940s. Trent University Archives holds the S. C. Shaw fonds, consisting of nine oil paintings created between 1941 and 1943, depicting locations around Stoney Lake, Burleigh Township, Keene, and the Peterborough region. Shaw specialized in small oil landscapes on board, recording rural Ontario scenes with a direct and naturalistic approach. While relatively little is known about the artist's life, the preservation of these paintings in a public institutional collection confirms Shaw's regional significance.
