Artist: Ernst Neumann (Canadian, 1907–1956) Title: Fortification Lane, Montreal Date: Circa 1935–1945 Medium: Original etching on paper Image Size: 7 × 8.5 in. Frame Size: 12 × 15 in. Signature: Signed "Ernst Neumann" in pencil lower right. Title: Inscribed in pencil lower left, "Fortification Lane, Montreal." An original signed etching depicting Fortification Lane in Old Montreal, one of the city's historic streets renowned for its nineteenth-century commercial architecture and covered passageways. Neumann presents the scene from beneath a heavy timber overpass, creating a dramatic interplay of architectural forms, deep shadows, and receding perspective. The solitary figure in the foreground lends scale while emphasizing the quiet atmosphere of Montreal's historic district. Artist Biography rnst Neumann (1907–1956) was a Hungarian-born Canadian painter, printmaker, and illustrator who immigrated to Montreal as a child. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and the Art Association of Montreal under Edwin Holgate, developing into one of Canada's finest printmakers of the twentieth century. Neumann is celebrated for his evocative etchings of Montreal's streets, architecture, and working-class neighbourhoods, as well as his socially conscious depictions of Depression-era life. His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Library and Archives Canada, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and the McCord Stewart Museum, among many others.
