Artist: Malte Sterner (Canadian, 1903–1952) Title: Lost Hills Medium: Original drypoint etching on paper Image Size: 8.5 × 6.5 in. Frame Size: 17 × 13 in. Signature: Signed in pencil lower right. Title: Titled in pencil lower left, Lost Hills. Signed in the plate lower left, STERNER. A finely executed original drypoint etching by Canadian printmaker Malte Sterner, depicting a tranquil panoramic landscape with tall pines rising above a broad valley of gently rolling hills. The composition balances the vertical rhythm of the foreground trees against an expansive, atmospheric countryside rendered with delicate tonal gradations and subtle drypoint burr. Artist Biography Malte Sterner (1903–1952) was a Canadian painter and printmaker of Danish birth who immigrated to Canada during the early twentieth century. Working primarily in Ontario and Quebec, he became known for his accomplished drypoints and etchings depicting landscapes, architecture, and sporting dogs. His work was exhibited through Canadian galleries and is represented in the National Gallery of Canada's Artists in Canada files. Sterner's prints are appreciated for their sensitive draftsmanship and restrained tonal quality.
