This lot is a hand carved and painted Apache Crown Dancer figure, also called a Gaan or Mountain Spirit dancer, mounted on a natural cut log slice base. The dancer is carved from wood, painted black with a white star on the chest, wrapped with red felt and a fringed buckskin kilt with metal studs, and wears the tall slatted wooden headdress with feathers that identifies the Crown Dancer. It is signed on the base Monte Morgan 2010. The figure stands roughly a foot and a half tall to the top of the headdress. Condition is good overall, but one of the wooden wands the dancer holds is broken and splintered at the tip as shown in the photos, and there is expected minor wear to the paint and trim. Signed Apache Crown Dancer carvings are collected as Southwest folk art and often sell in the fifty to one hundred fifty dollar range depending on size and condition.
