Title: Checkered Terrace Before an Orange Pavilion with Arched Windows Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 13 x 10 inches (33.0 x 25.4 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with bold, saturated coloration and confident, slightly raised brushwork, especially in the white linework and the checkered floor. No significant losses, tears, or creases are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a black wooden frame with a visible wood-grain texture, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Gifted from the private collection of the Choi family in Busan to their niece’s private collection in Seoul. Visual Description: A whimsical architectural fantasy in horizontal format, viewed across a terrace paved with a bold black and white checkerboard floor that recedes in steep perspective toward the background. At center stands a tangerine-orange pavilion with three tall arched windows in lavender and lilac, each capped by a striped fanlight, and crowned by a sculptural coral and salmon cornice of scrolls and swags. A white wrought-iron balcony railing with heart-shaped loops runs across its base, flanked by two slender white columns topped by a white urn and a black bust. At left, a white balustrade leads to a tall glass lamp on a black pedestal, set against a deep violet sky scattered with drifting yellow leaves or petals. At right, a second orange wall carries a large, pale moon, beside a narrow white tower with blue windows and a red top, framed by a cascade of green and yellow foliage beneath a lime-green sky. The flattened, stage-like space, unexpected juxtapositions, and saturated, non-naturalistic color give the scene a dreamlike, theatrical quality, reflecting the visual language of twentieth-century American folk-inflected and Surrealist-influenced painting. The lower right bears a painted inscription reading "Faulkner." This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
