Title: Crowned Figure with Blue Face and Red Eye Before Red and Yellow Fields Technique: Acrylic on canvas Measures: 23 x 15 inches (58.4 x 38.1 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with bold, saturated coloration and loose, energetic brushwork, including dry-brushed passages, scumbled color, and incised-looking white linework. No significant paint losses or tears are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Private Colelction Visual Description: A raw, frontal half-length figure dominates this vertical composition, set against a background split into broad zones of vermilion red at upper left, cream and pale pink at upper right, and golden yellow and cerulean blue below. The figure's head is a black mask-like form with a sky-blue face, outlined and crossed by scratchy white lines, with one eye a bright red disc marked with a black cross and the other a crimson ring. A grimacing mouth of white teeth sits above a long black neck striated with white marks. From the head, thick black strokes radiate outward like wild hair or a spiked crown, ending in rough crosses at the top. The torso is framed by a pale pink and white jacket drawn with angular black contours, over a red and black shirt layered with white grid lines and a small asterisk. Around the figure, sketchy black and red lines suggest architecture, a table with bottles at right, and triangular forms at upper right. The aggressive, graffiti-inflected line, the mask-like head, and the layering of drawing over expressive color fields reflect the visual language of Neo-Expressionism and early-1980s street-influenced painting. The lower right bears a painted inscription reading "BASQUIAT" beneath a small crown symbol. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
