Title: Tondo of a Flower Basket with Sunflowers and a Hummingbird Technique: Oil on wood Measures: 10 x 10 inches (25.4 x 25.4 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with bright, saturated coloration and smooth, carefully detailed paintwork. No significant paint losses or cracks are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a deep, dark-stained wooden frame with a stepped outer molding and a carved inner panel of acanthus scrolls and beaded ornament surrounding a circular sight opening, showing minor scuffs and wear consistent with age. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Acquired by private arrangement from the private collection of the Hoffmann family in Frankfurt to the private collection of the Bauer family in Cologne. Visual Description: A circular floral still life, presented as a tondo within a carved surround, showing an abundant bouquet arranged in a woven basket against a deep cobalt and ultramarine sky. Two large sunflowers with golden yellow petals and dark brown, seed-textured centers anchor the arrangement at upper center and left, surrounded by a profusion of blooms: crimson and scarlet dahlias, pale pink roses, white daisies, pink and white lilies, purple morning glories, orange zinnias, and clusters of tiny white and blush flowers. Feathery sprays of pale pink and white blossoms arc outward along the left and right edges, while bright green leaves of varying shapes fill the spaces between. At the bottom, two large lemon-yellow blossoms flank a green ribbon bow tied around the basket, whose woven texture is rendered in warm browns. A small hummingbird hovers above the bouquet at upper center. The flat, decorative arrangement, the crisp contours, the jewel-like palette, and the meticulous, almost devotional treatment of each flower reflect the visual language of Mexican modernism and its roots in folk and votive painting traditions. The upper right bears a painted inscription reading "Frida Kahlo 41." This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
