Contemporary green half-morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt. Contains the first appearance of Poe's short story, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," widely considered to be the birth of the detective story. Contains five additional pieces by Poe, including "A Descent into the Maelstrom" and "Never Bet [the Devil] Your Head." Condition One plate mostly missing, majority of p 149/150 in vol XVIII excised; but largely clean internally, with all Poe works intact; binding a bit rubbed.
