NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Measuring 24" tall to the upper hanger loop x 24" overall diameter, an impressive -15- light crystal chandelier displaying the elaborate gilt-metal and crystal treatment strongly associated with mid-century Hollywood Regency lighting. The fixture incorporates -6- exterior scrolling candle arms, -6- additional sockets mounted horizontally in a spoke arrangement extending outward from the central rod within the body, and -3- vertically oriented sockets tiered at different heights around the center rod. All accept E12 candelabra-base bulbs, providing illumination around the perimeter as well as throughout the interior of the crystal body. The substantial circular lower gallery is dressed with multiple descending tiers of elongated faceted crystal prisms. Above, graduated strands of faceted crystal beads rise toward the upper crown, which is further ornamented with rectangular crystal prisms and inset faceted elements. The combination of the internal -9- light arrangement with the exterior -6- candle arms allows the chandelier to illuminate the crystal from within while retaining the traditional outward candle presentation. The chandelier incorporates several decorative vocabularies frequently encountered in elaborate mid-century crystal lighting: scrolling gilt-tone arms, crystal-encrusted circular galleries, bead swags, vertically suspended prism curtains and a tall central stem composition. Comparable Hollywood Regency chandeliers of the 1960s were produced with unusually large numbers of internal light sources specifically to intensify reflection through dense crystal arrangements. Documented Palwa examples from Germany include -15- light crystal and gilt-brass chandeliers dating to the 1960s, although no maker's mark has been located on this fixture and no attribution to Palwa or another manufacturer is being made. The overall appearance and construction are consistent with the 1960s to 1970s Hollywood Regency period, when crystal, gilt or polished brass-tone metal and traditional European-inspired chandelier forms were widely incorporated into highly decorative interiors. Comparable period fixtures also employed crystal prism curtains and gilt-brass frameworks in closely related forms. A length of hanging chain is included and remains connected to the original ceiling canopy. The chandelier was functional when recently removed from service. Bulbs are not included. CONDITION REPORT > Presents impressively overall. The numerous installed crystal prisms and bead elements exhibit no overt issues, although individual crystals may display minor imperfections consistent with age and use. With the large number of separately suspended crystal elements, the fixture may be lacking an occasional crystal or component. No overt structural damage has been observed. As with any previously installed vintage electrical fixture, installation and continued service should be undertaken appropriately.
