SHIPPING AVAILABLE or LOCAL PICKUP > A Spanish military Model 1880 cavalry trooper’s saber, incorporating the 1888 regulation modifications, manufactured at the government arms factory at Toledo in 1893. The blade is clearly stamped ARTILLERIA ~ FABRICA ~ DE ~ TOLEDO ~ 1893. Published specifications for the Model 1880 list an overall length of 39-3/4", with a 33-3/4" blade, blade width of 1-1/4", and the saber weighs around 2 pounds. This regulation saber was produced for Spanish mounted military troops and features the characteristic steel Prussian-style guard with sweeping quillon, dark wrapped grip with metal wire winding, surviving leather finger safety loop, and long slightly curved unfullered blade. The Model 1880 was adopted for Spanish cavalry troops in 1880 and subsequently modified under the 1888 regulations. The 1893 manufacture date places this example immediately before the Cuban War of Independence of 1895–1898 and the Spanish-American War of 1898, during the period when this pattern remained in Spanish military service. No representation is made that this individual saber was carried in either conflict, but it is an authentic regulation military pattern of the period. The substantial steel hilt remains intact with the wire wrapping and leather finger loop present. Blade and guard retain extensive dark age patina with oxidation, surface corrosion and pitting consistent with age and long-term storage. CONDITION REPORT > Extensive age-related oxidation, dark patina, surface corrosion and pitting throughout the blade and guard. Grip wrapping, wire and leather finger loop remain substantially intact. Blade appears full length with point present. Toledo arsenal marking remains legible, after brief, minimal cleaning to examine lettering and present in photographs.
