AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > MISSISSIPPI: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY by Edward N. Akin, a first edition published in 1987 by Windsor Publications in cooperation with the Mississippi Historical Society. Hardcover first edition. ISBN 0897812255. The Library of Congress catalogs this edition under Mississippi history, and the Mississippi Historical Society identifies it as the first popular illustrated history of the state that the Society sponsored. HANDWRITTEN INSCRIPTION TO TITLE PAGE A broad visual history of Mississippi tracing the state from its earliest peoples and European exploration through settlement, statehood, the Civil War, Reconstruction, industrial and agricultural development, politics, culture and modern life. The volume combines narrative history with a substantial selection of historical photographs, paintings, drawings and other period imagery, making it useful both as a reference and as a pictorial record of the state. Edward N. Akin was a historian and author of Southern history who taught at Mississippi College in Clinton. His other work included a prize-winning biography of industrialist Henry Flagler. The book has particular appeal for collectors of Mississippi history, Southern history, local history, Civil War material, Mississippi towns and communities, architecture, politics, historic photographs and state memorabilia. The original 1987 edition was later revised and updated in 2002, making this copy the earlier original version.
