Set of four vintage Academy Arts Chicago Asian-inspired botanical framed prints, each measuring 13 x 18 inches overall, with a 6 x 11 inch visible central image. The coordinated compositions feature delicate floral, foliage and bird imagery rendered in soft green, blue and white tones, reflecting the Asian or Oriental decorative style that became especially popular in American interiors during the mid-20th century. The imagery is presented within pale celadon geometric-patterned mats with a distinctly Asian-influenced fretwork design. The prints also retain what appear to be printed artist signatures reproduced from the original source artwork, with at least one example showing “Lee” as the surname. These signatures are best understood as part of the printed image rather than hand-applied signatures on the finished decorative pieces. The group retains the original, more elaborate layered presentation typical of quality decorator art of the period. Glass covers the patterned mat and central image area, creating a double-insert effect, while each piece is finished with a substantial brass-tone metal outer frame exhibiting an aged gold patina and a separate raised convex brass-tone inner frame surrounding the central print. Original reverse label identifies ACADEMY ARTS, 820 N. Orleans St., Chicago, Illinois 60610, Division of Intercraft Industries Corp., Made in U.S.A., Style 8373, Pack 4. The “Pack 4” designation is significant, indicating these were produced and marketed as a coordinated four-piece decorative grouping rather than assembled individually. Academy Arts was a prominent American producer and distributor of framed decorative wall art, mirrors and reproduction artwork, active by the early 1960s. The company marketed coordinated decorative compositions for the home furnishings and interior decorating trade. This set is consistent with that production model and with the strong American interest in Asian-influenced decorative interiors during the late 1960s through 1970s. The principal appeal of the group lies in the complete original Style 8373 four-piece ensemble, retaining the coordinated Asian-style prints, geometric mats, glass, brass-tone framing, printed artist signatures and original manufacturer label.
