AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Vintage Schrade Old Timer HS-1 Honesteel sharpening tool with original leather sheath and handle assembly. The flat steel bar is marked SCHRADE ~ OLD TIMER ~ HONESTEEL ~ PAT. PEND., while the leather sheath is embossed SCHRADE ~ OLD TIMER ~ HONESTEEL. The HS-1 Honesteel was introduced by Schrade in the early 1970s as a compact field sharpening tool. The flat textured steel was designed for maintaining knife edges without oil, while the fitted leather sheath could be repositioned for use as a handle. The two-hole configuration at the upper end is associated with the early form of the tool, with one opening accommodating the leather thong and the larger opening engaging the sheath hardware when configured for use. Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in Walden, New York in 1904 by George Schrade, an inventive cutler whose earlier work helped establish the American automatic knife industry. The company became one of the most important names in American sporting and pocket cutlery, later moving production to Ellenville, New York in 1958. Schrade introduced the Old Timer line in 1959, and the brand developed a strong following for practical hunting, pocket and utility knives produced for the American sporting market. U.S. production at the Ellenville factory continued until 2004. This example carries the PAT. PEND. marking, placing it within the early production period before the patent marking was updated and adding particular interest for collectors of early Schrade Old Timer accessories.
