AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > First edition hardcover copy of ~MISSISSIPPI OBSERVED~, published by the University Press of Mississippi in 1994. The oblong-format volume measures approximately 11.4 x 9.3 inches and contains 144 pages illustrated with more than 200 black and white duotone photographs drawn from the collections of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. ISBN 0-87805-727-7. Photographs were selected and edited by Sheree Hightower and Cathie Stanga, with literary selections chosen and edited by Carol Cox. The volume combines historic Mississippi photography with selections from literary works by Mississippians, creating a broad visual and literary portrait of the state and its people. The photographs were selected from numerous collections maintained by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and document an extraordinary range of subjects, including rural life, families, towns and cities, transportation, railroad lines, river commerce, agriculture, labor, businesses, architecture and everyday life. Many of the images preserve places, occupations and scenes that had already largely disappeared by the time the book was published. A substantial photographic history of Mississippi, particularly appealing for the breadth of archival imagery and the pairing of historic photographs with the words of Mississippi writers. A remarkably well-preserved example.
