Traditional Diné (Navajo) pottery jar by Rose Williams (1915–2015), an influential artist widely recognized as a matriarch of contemporary Navajo pottery. This substantial vessel measures approximately 10" tall x 8.25" at its widest point and features Williams’ characteristic rounded form, warm brown and smoky black fire-cloud coloration, and a raised biyo’ appliqué band encircling the upper body. The surface is finished with piñon pine pitch, a traditional element of Diné pottery. The Smithsonian documents the same combination of piñon pitch, fire clouds, and biyo’ decoration in Williams’ work. The underside is signed “RW,” a documented signature used by Rose Williams on her pottery. Comparable documented examples also feature the initials RW, piñon pitch finish, fire clouds, and the traditional biyo’ band. A wonderful example of signed Native American pottery, Diné ceramic art, Navajo piñon-pitch pottery, and Southwestern collectible art by an important 20th-century potter. Surface variations, rubbing, scratches, and firing characteristics are visible from age and handling. See photos for signature, biyo’ decoration, coloration, dimensions, and overall condition.
