Pitseolak Ashoona (1904–1983), stone cut & stencil, "Women Playing with Bear Cub", 22" x 29", signed lower right, titled lower left, number 2 / 50 (framed). Pitseolak Ashoona (1904–1983) was a highly acclaimed Inuit artist from Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut, and an important figure in the development of modern Inuit graphic art. A self-taught artist, Ashoona began her artistic career in the late 1950s with sewing and embroidery before turning to drawing. She worked primarily with graphite, pencil crayons and felt-tip pens, creating expressive works inspired by Inuit life, family, stories, traditions and experiences. Her distinctive freehand style, characterized by strong outlines and rapid, energetic lines, became widely recognized. Ashoona achieved international acclaim and was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1974 and appointed to the Order of Canada in 1977. Her work remains significant for its documentation of Inuit women's lives, cultural knowledge and resilience.
