John William Beatty O.S.A, R.C.A (1869 - 1941), oil on board, "Hill Landscape", 9" x 12" , signed lower right and dated 1910 (framed). James William Beatty (1869–1941) was a Toronto-born painter who trained in Toronto, Paris, and London, became a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy, and emerged as an early influence on the Group of Seven through sketching trips with Lawren Harris, J.E.H. MacDonald, A.Y. Jackson, and likely Tom Thomson. His work evolved from European-influenced tonal studies to bright northern landscapes, earning national recognition, major exhibitions, and inclusion in the National Gallery of Canada, documented through records from the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), the National Gallery of Canada (NGC), and the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA).
