Fred Ross O.C., O.N.B., LL.D., R.C.A. (1927-2014), pastel on paper, "Study For Girl With Shell", 15" x 11", signed upper right, Cassel Galleries label on reverse (framed). Fred Ross (1927-2014) was a celebrated Canadian painter and muralist from Saint John, New Brunswick, known for his figurative work and psychological depth. Born and trained locally at the Saint John Vocational School, he studied mural painting, travelled to Mexico to see the work of Diego Rivera and Pablo O'Higgins, and taught art in Saint John before devoting himself full-time to painting. Ross exhibited widely in Canada and abroad, was honoured with the Order of Canada, Order of New Brunswick, and an honorary doctorate, and his work is held in major public collections including the National Gallery of Canada.
