David Alexander Colville, Order of Canada, R.C.A. (1920 - 2013), silkscreen, "Morning", 21.5"d, signed lower center, dated 1981 and number 15 / 70 (framed). Alex Colville (1920–2013), born in Toronto and raised in Amherst, Nova Scotia (which he regarded as home), was a painter, draughtsman, engraver, and muralist whose meticulously constructed, geometrically precise works reflect his dark view of the world in suspended, disquieting atmospheres; after studying at Mount Allison University and serving as a military artist during World War II he taught briefly before committing fully to painting, and over his career he received major retrospectives, was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, won the Governor General’s Visual and Media Arts Award, and saw record-breaking sales, for example, his 1976 Dog and Bridge sold for over C$2.4 million, and his 1963 June Noon fetched C$2.16 million, according to coverage by the Canadian Press and The Art Newspaper.
