Seth Thomas American wall clock, mid-19th century, housed in a richly finished mahogany or mahogany-veneered architectural case with a broad projecting cornice, turned side columns, molded lower base, and a hinged glazed door incorporating two distinct decorative sections. The upper painted metal dial features bold black Roman numerals, delicately painted floral corner motifs, twin winding apertures, pierced hands, and an open center revealing portions of the brass movement, while the lower reverse-painted glass tablet depicts an architectural town or civic scene with buildings, trees, and a central monument rendered in muted greens, creams, and earth tones. The interior retains a period Seth Thomas paper label reading in part “Made and Sold by Seth Thomas, Plymouth Hollow, Conn.”, an important surviving maker’s mark confirming manufacture by the celebrated Connecticut clockmaker. Seth Thomas introduced brass movements in the 1840s and continued producing a wide variety of architectural shelf and wall clocks during the following decades; clocks bearing the Plymouth Hollow designation generally belong to the period before the locality became known as Thomaston in the mid-19th century.
