Substantial late 19th- to early 20th-century Jacobean Revival throne armchair, constructed in dark-finished hardwood with a tall rectangular upholstered back, broad flat armrests, turned arm supports and front legs, carved paw-form front feet, and stretcher-joined base. The imposing architectural proportions reflect the renewed late-Victorian and Edwardian interest in 17th-century English furniture, with the dramatically high back and heavy open-arm construction giving the chair a distinctly baronial presence; comparable examples are variously cataloged as Jacobean, Renaissance Revival, or 17th-century-style throne chairs. (Easy Live Auction? ) The chair is upholstered in muted rose-pink patterned damask, with coordinating upholstery to the generously padded seat and back and decorative metallic braid outlining the front seat rail and edges of the back. Particularly attractive details include the finely turned supports beneath the arms, molded rectangular arm terminals, and carved paw feet projecting from the front legs. The upholstery shows overall fading, discoloration, scattered stains, edge wear and localized fraying or separation, especially along the back and lower seat surround, while the exposed wood displays scratches, rubbing, finish wear, small abrasions and other evidence of age and use. The rear upholstery panel is noticeably faded and soiled, and the decorative trim shows some wear and looseness, but the chair remains visually impressive and highly decorative. Similar Jacobean and Renaissance Revival throne chairs with high backs, turned supports and paw feet continue to appear regularly in the auction market, including recent examples offered by LiveAuctioneers and other established auction houses. Measures 50.5"H x 24"W x 24.5"D and seat height is 22"H.
