Early 19th C. Federal Drop Leaf Gateleg Table

A handsome early 19th-century Federal mahogany drop-leaf dining or breakfast table, distinguished by a richly figured rectangular top with two broad hinged leaves that allow the table to transition from a compact console-like profile to a considerably larger dining surface. The top displays particularly attractive sweeping mahogany grain with warm reddish-brown coloration and dramatic natural figuring, supported by a restrained rectangular apron and finely proportioned turned legs ornamented with deeply reeded shafts, ring-turned collars, and slender tapered feet characteristic of Federal-period design. The combination of elegant proportions, practical drop-leaf construction, and understated classical detailing makes the table especially versatile for dining, serving, or use behind a sofa or against a wall when the leaves are lowered. Condition is consistent with age and use, including scattered scratches, abrasions, finish wear and discoloration to the top, a prominent circular ring mark, small stains and spotting, edge and corner wear, and general surface variation throughout; there is additional rubbing and minor wear to the legs and apron, with the table retaining an appealing old surface and strong period character.
