Dramatic scenes of betrayal, flight, counsel, and death unfold across this complete four-part biblical series illustrating the story of Absalom from the Second Book of Samuel, rendered with exceptionally dense Renaissance-era figure work, architectural detail, and finely engraved linework. The series was engraved by Johannes (Johan) Wierix (1549–c. 1620) after designs by Maarten de Vos (1532–1603), with the first plate bearing the inscriptions “M. de vos inventor” and the publisher’s address “C.J. Visscher excudit.” The four compositions depict Absalom courting the people of Israel, Shimei cursing and casting stones at King David, Absalom consulting Hushai and Ahithophel, and the death of Absalom after becoming caught in a tree, each accompanied by a Latin verse and its corresponding reference to II Samuel. Institutional records identify these same four numbered compositions as a related sequence by Wierix after De Vos, while recorded examples are generally dated to the late 16th century, with impressions carrying the Claes Jansz. Visscher address representing a subsequent published state around the turn of the 17th century. Each engraving is presented under glass with a wide fabric-covered mat in a coordinating silver-tone molded frame. The prints show expected age-related toning and scattered discoloration, while the frames exhibit scuffs, scratches, finish wear, and areas of molding loss, most noticeably along one outer edge as pictured. A handsome and unusually cohesive framed group of four Old Master biblical engravings with strong decorative and historical appeal. Measures 8.5"X 10.75" and 15.75" x 17.75".
