A striking 18th-century wrought iron alms or offertory box, constructed in a tall architectural form with a tapering, flared upper section terminating in a broad rectangular coin receiver with a narrow offering slot. The substantial rectangular body is assembled with riveted iron panels and accented by bold twisted-rope moldings, decorative shaped plates, and a prominent double hasp arrangement designed to secure the contents with a lock. A projecting perforated iron mounting bracket extends from the rear, consistent with boxes of this type being secured within a church or chapel to receive charitable offerings. The dark, naturally aged iron surface retains a richly worn patina with scattered oxidation, rubbing, scratches, finish loss, and other surface wear consistent with considerable age and historic use. Mounted on a rectangular wood plinth. An unusual and highly decorative piece of early ecclesiastical ironwork with strong architectural presence. Measures 12.75"H x 5"W x 4"D.
