A large and highly decorative Gerz West Germany stoneware punch bowl or covered tureen, richly molded in high relief with an architectural tour of historic German castles and landmarks set against deep cobalt-blue grounds. Individual scenic reserves are identified with names including Burg Sonneck, Burg Lahneck, Drachenfels, Feindl. Brüder, Burg Katz, Mausethurm, and Ruine Maus, surrounded by raised grape clusters, broad vine leaves, scrolling tendrils, and other molded ornament in green, blue, and warm brown tones. The substantial bulbous body is fitted with two large sculptural handles and a domed lid crowned by a tall castle-form finial, giving the piece an especially impressive display presence. Both the vessel and lid bear the triangular GERZ / W. GERMANY factory mark, along with impressed model or size numbers. Condition shows age and use including surface wear and soiling, with several noticeable chips and losses along the rim and molded decoration as photographed, including areas around the upper rim and vine-leaf ornament; additional scattered minor glaze wear and abrasions are present. An imposing example of German relief-decorated stoneware with strong architectural and tavern-display appeal. Measures 12"H x 11"W x 8"D.
