A rare and highly distinctive certified Inuit stone sculpture by Albert Qayutinnuaq of Taloyoak, Nunavut, titled “Two Faces on Base,” carved in 1990 and accompanied by its original Government of Canada certification tag. Measuring 5" x 4" x 4 1/2" tall, this sculptural work presents two boldly abstracted human faces rising from a dark stone base on slender wooden supports, creating a striking ceremonial, symbolic, and almost totemic presence.

Qayutinnuaq’s carving displays the expressive visual language associated with late 20th-century Taloyoak Inuit sculpture: simplified figural forms, deeply incised facial details, strong profile silhouettes, and a powerful balance between raw stone texture and polished surface. One face is carved with an emphasized eye and jagged crown-like edge, while the opposing form features an elongated profile with rhythmic notched detailing, giving the work a compelling sense of dialogue, duality, and spiritual presence. The back of one face is richly incised with linear markings, adding texture and visual complexity beyond the frontal view.

This is an especially desirable example because it retains its original bilingual Government of Canada certification label identifying the artist, community, title, and date. Comparable Albert Qayutinnuaq works appear only occasionally in the secondary market, with similar face sculptures and Taloyoak carvings generally occupying a modest but specialized Inuit art collecting niche.

Good vintage condition overall, with age-appropriate surface wear, scuffs, scratches, dust in recesses, minor rubbing, old label residue, and natural stone irregularities visible throughout. Wooden support pegs intact with no structural losses to base.
66552
