After Frederic Remington (American, 1861-1909), "The Cheyenne," an impressive large-scale patinated bronze sculpture after Remington's celebrated 1901 composition, among the most recognizable and dynamically conceived equestrian subjects in the canon of American Western art. Depicting a Cheyenne warrior charging forward at tremendous speed upon a galloping horse, the composition captures the drama, movement and romanticized frontier imagery for which Remington's sculpture remains internationally renowned.

The warrior leans forcefully into the motion of the horse while carrying a long spear, with shield positioned across his back and a dramatically modeled buffalo robe sweeping downward beneath the rider and mount. The horse is portrayed in an extraordinary moment of suspended movement with its legs drawn clear of the ground, creating the impression of horse and rider hurtling through space. The cascading robe beneath the figure serves both as a powerful sculptural element and as an ingenious visual support, preserving the remarkable sense of weightlessness and forward momentum central to Remington's original conception.

Finely modeled throughout, the bronze incorporates carefully articulated musculature to the horse and rider, textured hide and hair, detailed tack and reins, weaponry, clothing and expressive surface modeling. The vigorous handling of the bronze lends the sculpture considerable visual energy from every viewing angle, while the deep brown patina enhances the richly worked surfaces and sculptural depth. Mounted on an elongated oval black marble plinth with natural pale veining, the work possesses substantial decorative presence and displays exceptionally well as a centerpiece within a Western Americana, American sculpture or equestrian art collection.

Signed "Frederic Remington" in the bronze and additionally bearing a small cast or inscribed mark. Overall dimensions approximately 19" x 7 1/2" x 15 1/2" high.

"The Cheyenne" occupies an important place within Frederic Remington's sculptural legacy. Conceived at the beginning of the 20th century, the composition exemplifies the artist's fascination with extreme equestrian movement and his ability to translate the speed, tension and physicality of the American West into three-dimensional form. Its dramatic silhouette and instantly recognizable subject have made "The Cheyenne" one of the enduring images associated with Remington and the broader tradition of American Western sculpture.

Condition appears generally good overall with scattered surface dust, minor patina variation and rubbing, localized oxidation or verdigris, and normal evidence of handling. The marble plinth exhibits scratches, abrasions and minor edge wear. The projecting spear and reins are present.

A commanding and highly recognizable American Western bronze subject with broad crossover appeal to collectors of Frederic Remington, Western Americana, Native American imagery, Ameri
