A historically profound piece of early global trade, maritime commerce, and American colonial history. This copper Duit was struck by the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC)—the legendary Dutch East India Company—the most powerful corporate empire of the 18th century. While these trade coins were originally intended for Dutch colonial ports in the Far East (such as modern-day Indonesia), an extreme shortage of copper coinage in the New World caused them to circulate extensively throughout early America.
