An exceptional piece of Late Antiquity history, this genuine bronze nummus (follis) was struck during the historic reign of Emperor Valentinian I (also known as Valentinian the Great). Ruling the Western Roman Empire from AD 364 to 375, Valentinian was the absolute last great military emperor to successfully secure the western frontiers. A fierce soldier-emperor, he dedicated his decade-long rule to fortified defense, building an extensive network of frontier fortresses and successfully repelling aggressive Germanic invasions by the Alamanni, Franks, and Saxons.
