A fascinating piece of 19th-century colonial numismatics and maritime history, this 1840-W Netherlands East Indies 1 Cent coin has been independently authenticated and encapsulated as Genuine by NGC. Struck under the authority of Dutch King Willem I at the Utrecht Mint (indicated by the "W" mintmark), these heavy copper coins were minted specifically for use in the bustling spice trade ports of the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia).
