Three pieces out of a Marine Corps household. (1) A cast metal bulldog in a campaign cover, silver-tone with dark patina settled in the recesses, standing on a stepped base marked U.S. MARINES with the eagle, globe and anchor emblem; the figure stands roughly 4 to 5 inches tall on a base about 2.5 inches wide. (2) A brass Marine Corps campaign hat replica about 2.5 inches across the brim, stamped UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS around the edge, with a small dark blue eagle, globe and anchor device fixed to the crown. (3) A brass sundial plate about 3 inches across, cast with Roman numerals, a winged hourglass and the old motto I COUNT NONE BUT SUNNY HOURS, gnomon intact. The winged hourglass and that motto are standard on English and American garden dials and stand for time passing, which is why the phrase turns up on so many of them. The sundial carries green verdigris in the low spots; the bulldog and hat show even tarnish and light rubbing on the high points. Condition is good throughout, with no breaks or repairs visible.
