Miss Carrie L. North, East Berlin, Conn. Circular date stamp reads EAST BERLIN / 19 / CT (day only; year not in the strike). The stamp has a manuscript “X” (pen cancel), same style as the first Middletown cover. Envelope is soiled and spotted; reverse is a plain stained flap. Standard 1861 National Bank Note 3¢ rose, perf 12, ungrilled. 3¢ domestic rate. Manuscript cancels were typical of smaller offices. East Berlin is a village in the town of Berlin, Hartford County (still has its own post office on Main Street). The North family is an old local name there; “Miss Carrie L. North” is a hometown addressee, not a public figure. Civilian correspondence.Local settingBerlin/East Berlin sits in central Connecticut between New Britain, Middletown, and Hartford. The village later put up its own Civil War monument (Washburn Post G.A.R., 1871) listing local names and battles (Antietam, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Port Hudson, Andersonville, Florence). This cover is ordinary village mail, not camp or patriotic mail.
