Scott #65 on a small white cover to Foxborough, Massachusetts.Addressed to Miss Anna F. Perkins, Foxboro Mass. Partial circular date stamp at left (Massachusetts-style CDS, town name not fully readable). Stamp is the usual 3¢ rose Washington with a blotchy cancel. Reverse is plain except for a later collector inventory mark (“AX1-72-’76”). Envelope is slightly small/narrow, typical of period ladies’ or folded correspondence. Standard 1861 3¢ rose, perf 12, ungrilled. Ordinary 3¢ domestic rate. “Miss” plus a small-town Massachusetts address points to civilian family mail—most often a young woman receiving a letter from a relative or suitor. Foxborough (official spelling; USPS still uses “Foxboro”) is in Norfolk County, about 22 miles southwest of Boston. After Fort Sumter, a rider reached town the night of April 15, 1861; Company F of the 4th Massachusetts Militia left the next day and was among the first Union units to plant the flag on Southern soil at Fortress Monroe. The town sent 187 men; 21 died of wounds or disease and two disappeared in Confederate prisons. Memorial Hall (1868) and a soldier statue on the common honor them. This cover is home-front mail into that town
