Title: Figures and Constellations Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 16 x 14 inches (40.6 x 35.6 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Good condition. The sheet presents well-preserved gouache passages with defined linear elements and balanced areas of color. Minor handling wear, gentle waviness, and light age-related toning consistent with the medium may be present. The paper appears stable and display-ready, retaining its muted coloration and decorative appeal. Presented matted under glazing in an ornate white frame showing light age-related wear. Provenance: From a private collection in New York. Reportedly acquired from a European private owner during the late 1980s and subsequently retained in private hands. No supporting documentation concerning the acquisition or earlier ownership accompanied the work. This provenance reflects information supplied verbally by the consignor. Visual Description: This imaginative composition depicts two whimsical figures surrounded by floating lines, dots, spirals, stars, and abstract celestial symbols. The larger figure is assembled from rounded, interlocking passages of red, blue, green, black, and white, while the smaller figure features an oval body, pointed geometric nose, and mismatched legs. Delicate black lines animate the softly modulated beige, gray, and pastel background, creating a playful sense of weightlessness. The biomorphic forms, primary colors, and constellation-like imagery recall the Surrealist visual vocabulary associated with Joan Miró. Bears an inscription reading “Miró” near the lower right. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
