Title: Untitled (Head) Technique: Mixed media on canvas Measures: 35 x 35 inches (88.9 x 88.9 cm) Year: 1982, according to markings and the label on the reverse Condition: Good overall condition. The painted surface presents layered applications of pigment, energetic linear passages, drips, and areas of visible texture throughout. Scattered abrasions, paint losses, edge wear, and handling marks are visible. The reverse shows areas of discoloration, staining, and surface wear. The canvas is mounted on an irregular cross-form wooden support and appears display-ready. Please review all photographs as part of the condition report. Provenance: From a private family collection in the United States. According to verbal family history, the work was purchased from a street vendor in New York in 1989 and has remained within the same family since that time. No receipt or supporting documentation from the reported purchase accompanied the work upon consignment. This provenance reflects the history supplied when the artwork was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This large square composition centers on a mask-like head surrounded by looping anatomical forms, energetic brushwork, and fragmented markings. The face is constructed from overlapping passages of white, yellow, red, blue, and black, with enlarged eyes, a broad nose, and exposed grid-like teeth. Green, pink, blue, and black color fields divide the background, while coiled linear structures and repeated marks create a sense of movement and tension. Partially legible letter and number combinations appear across the lower section. The raw execution, skeletal imagery, graffiti-derived marks, and psychologically charged central figure recall the Neo-Expressionist vocabulary associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat. Additional Information: The reverse bears red inscriptions and symbols, including a crown-like motif, letter and number combinations, and a cursive marking. A label referring to Gagosian Gallery is also affixed to the reverse and appears to contain artist, title, medium, dimension, and dating information. These markings, label, reported provenance, and stylistic associations are presented solely for cataloging purposes and do not independently establish authenticity, authorship by Jean-Michel Basquiat, exhibition history, provenance, or a documented gallery transaction. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
