Title: Orange, White, and Olive on Violet Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 20 x 16 inches (50.8 x 40.6 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Good condition. The painted surface presents layered fields of color with softly feathered edges and visible tonal variation. Minor surface wear and handling marks consistent with age and display may be present. Areas of discoloration and scattered spotting are visible on the reverse of the canvas. The support appears stable and display-ready. Presented in a decorative blue, white, and gold-tone frame showing light age-related wear. Provenance: From a private collection in the United Kingdom; reportedly acquired through the secondary market before subsequently entering an American private collection. No documentation establishing the preceding chain of ownership was supplied. This provenance reflects the ownership history that accompanied the artwork when received for cataloging. Visual Description: This vertical abstract composition consists of stacked rectangular fields floating against a violet-blue ground. A large orange passage occupies the lower portion, separated from an olive-green upper field by a narrow band of white. A darker green rectangle appears suspended within the upper passage, introducing an additional layer of tonal depth. Soft boundaries and subtle pigment transitions allow the colors to interact atmospherically, creating a meditative sense of balance and spatial ambiguity. The simplified arrangement and luminous color relationships recall the Color Field paintings associated with Mark Rothko. Additional Information: The reverse bears a large stencil reading “MARK ROTHKO,” accompanied by circular ink stamps or collection-style markings. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
