Autographed 1984 Decathlon Negro League Baseball Stars Trading Cards (17 Cards Total - All Signed). Signatures Include: (2x) Lorenzo "Piper" Davis, (2x) Joe Fillmore, Clint Thomas, Bill Byrd, Bob Boyd, Andy Watts, Ziggy Marcell, Ron Teasley, George Giles, Art "Superman" Pennington, Andy Anderson, Normal "Tweed" Webb, Max Manning, Sidney Morton & Pat Scantlebury. A remarkable collection of signatures from players whose careers represent an essential chapter in American baseball history. The 1984 Decathlon set was among the important early card issues devoted specifically to honoring Negro League players, produced while many of these veterans were still available to personally autograph their cards. The clear highlight of the grouping is the signed Clint Thomas card, representing one of the most accomplished players included in the set. Nicknamed the "Hawk," Thomas was a standout outfielder whose Negro League career stretched from the 1920s into the 1930s and included time with legendary clubs such as the Hilldale Club and New York Lincoln Giants, making his autograph an especially desirable connection to an earlier generation of Black baseball. The collection also includes two signed examples each of Lorenzo "Piper" Davis and Joe Fillmore, along with signed cards of Bill Byrd, Bob Boyd, Andy Watts, Ziggy Marcell, Ron Teasley, George Giles, Art "Superman" Pennington, Andy Anderson, Normal "Tweed" Webb, Max Manning, Sidney Morton and Pat Scantlebury. Other notable names include Byrd, one of the outstanding pitchers of the Negro National League; Pennington, a celebrated power hitter whose career extended into Latin America and integrated professional baseball; Manning, an accomplished pitcher for the Newark Eagles; and Davis, a Birmingham Black Barons standout who played alongside a young Willie Mays. Particularly significant today is the scarcity of many of these autographs, as every player represented in the grouping is now deceased, permanently limiting the available supply of genuine signatures. Combining 17 period cards, 17 autographs and an exceptional concentration of Negro League history, highlighted by the especially desirable Clint Thomas signed card, this collection provides a tangible connection to players whose accomplishments have become an increasingly celebrated and indispensable part of baseball history.
