METLOX POPPYTRAIL DEL REY FREE FORM RELISH OR CELERY DISH - SPECKLED BLUE AND WHITE, ATOMIC SHAPE A long, low free form serving dish in the same speckled two-tone Metlox Del Rey treatment as the gravy boat offered earlier in this consignment, with the colors reversed - a soft speckled blue well inside and a creamy speckled white body outside. The shape is pure mid-century atomic: an elongated leaf or teardrop that narrows to a lifted, upswept point at one end and rests on a small oval foot, so the dish appears to hover over the table. Ideal for celery and olives, pickles, relish, crackers, nuts, or candy, and just as good used empty as a sculptural centerpiece on a credenza or coffee table. Sold as one piece. Description Single free form relish or celery dish, elongated asymmetrical leaf shape with a shallow well, one end drawn up into a lifted point, standing on a small oval foot ring. Measures approximately 10-1/4" to 11" long and approximately 2-1/2" tall at the high point, per the tape-measure photographs. The width was not measured with the tape and appears to be roughly 4-1/2". Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Interior finished in a satin speckled powder blue; exterior in a satin speckled off-white, with the color break running cleanly along the rim edge and along the top of the lifted point. The underside is fully glazed in the speckled white with a recessed oval foot, as pictured. Attribution note Del Rey is a Metlox pattern in the Poppytrail line, produced at Metlox Potteries of Manhattan Beach, California, and it is built around exactly this combination of satin speckled glazes and organic free form shapes. Replacements, Ltd. catalogs the pattern as Metlox Poppytrail Vernon Del Rey. Metlox marked its wares inconsistently across production runs, and many pieces left the factory with only a foil or paper label that washed off in use, which accounts for unmarked examples like this one. The Metlox Del Rey identification follows the glaze, speckling, and shape and matches the marked pattern family seen elsewhere in this consignment; it is offered as the consignor's photo-based opinion rather than a guarantee. Bid on the item as pictured. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. In the photographs the glazes are clean and even, the blue well is uniform, and the speckling is consistent throughout. No chips, cracks, breaks, or repairs are visible in the photographs. Light surface scuffs and faint handling wear consistent with age may be present, and satin glazes of this type pick up small marks readily. Areas to study closely are the thin rim edges along the full length, the lifted point at the narrow end, and the oval foot ring. Photos are part of the description.
