LARGE FRANCISCAN DESERT ROSE ROUND SALAD OR SERVING BOWL - HAND-DECORATED CALIFORNIA EARTHENWARE A generous round serving bowl in Franciscan Desert Rose, the best-selling American dinnerware pattern ever produced. The deep, gently flaring bowl has the pattern's signature soft-scalloped rim, hand painted with open pink wild roses, plump buds, two-tone green leaves, and tan thorny stems, all finished with the pale green wash that traces the scalloped edge. The interior is a clean warm off-white, and the bowl sits on a low ringed foot. Big enough to be the centerpiece serving piece of the table - tossed salad, pasta, rolls, fruit, or a filled display bowl on a sideboard. Sold as one piece. Description Round Desert Rose salad or serving bowl, deep flared form with a soft-scalloped and slightly waved rim, on a low ringed foot. Measures approximately 10-1/4" to 10-1/2" in diameter across the rim and approximately 3-1/2" tall per the tape-measure photographs. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Hand-painted underglaze decoration in the Desert Rose pattern: open five-petal pink roses with yellow-and-brown stamen centers, closed pink buds, glossy green leaves, and brown-tan thorn sprays around the exterior, with a green banded wash following the scalloped rim. Interior is undecorated glossy off-white. Backstamp: dotted oval mark with ring lettering reading INTERPACE across the top and MADE IN U.S.A. across the bottom, enclosing a small over Franciscan in script over EARTHENWARE. Below the oval are the numbers 30-71 and the line OVENSAFE/COLOR FAST. Attribution note Franciscan Desert Rose was introduced in 1941 by Gladding, McBean & Co. of Los Angeles and became the most successful American dinnerware pattern of the twentieth century, with California production continuing into the mid-1980s. Gladding, McBean was absorbed into Interpace Corporation in the early 1960s, and reference sources including Replacements, Ltd. and the Gladding, McBean Franciscan archive associate the "Interpace" ring wording on Franciscan backstamps with the roughly mid-1960s through 1970s period of California production, before the brand passed into the Wedgwood era and manufacturing moved overseas. That places this bowl in the Interpace-era American production rather than the earliest Gladding, McBean years or the later England and Portugal pieces.
