SIGNED AND DATED 1993 STUDIO ART POTTERY SERVING BOWL - COBALT BLUE AND OXBLOOD RED DRIP GLAZE - HAND-THROWN WITH SCULPTED LUG HANDLES A striking one-of-a-kind piece of hand-thrown studio art pottery. The wide, low serving bowl has two hand-pulled lug handles applied at the rim, each finished with a sculpted curled clay accent where it meets the body. The glaze work is the story here: a deep mottled cobalt blue flowing over a soft oatmeal cream body, split by a dramatic band of oxblood burgundy that runs and drips over the rim and down the outside, with pale sage green and rust brown breaking along the rim edge and the foot line. The interior carries the same blue-and-oxblood flow radiating out from a small burgundy target dot at the center of the well. The base is incised with the potter's cursive signature and the date 93. A real hand-made piece, not a factory item - excellent as a salad or pasta serving bowl, a bread bowl, or a display piece where the glaze can be seen. Sold as one piece. Description Hand-thrown stoneware serving or salad bowl, wide low flared form with a slightly straightened rim and two applied hand-pulled lug handles, each accented with a small sculpted curl of clay. Measures approximately 9-1/2" to 10" across the rim and approximately 4" to 4-1/4" tall per the tape-measure photographs. Overall width across the two handles was not separately measured with the tape and appears to run roughly an inch wider. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. Glaze: high-gloss mottled cobalt blue over roughly two-thirds of the exterior, meeting an unglazed-looking soft cream and tan panel, with a running oxblood burgundy drip band over the rim and down the wall. Rim and lower body carry banded breaks of sage green, rust, and tan. Interior repeats the blue and oxblood flow over cream with a small round burgundy accent dot at the center of the well. Bubbling and pooling in the red glaze is characteristic of a reduction or copper-red type glaze and is part of the intended effect. Base mark: incised by hand in cursive script, a potter's signature over the date 93. The signature is shallow and reads indistinctly in the photographs. Bidders are encouraged to review the close-up photographs as they are part of the description. Attribution note This is studio or art pottery rather than commercial dinnerware - hand-thrown on the wheel, hand-glazed, and signed and dated by the maker, with the pulled and sculpted lug handles, visible throwing rings, and one-off glaze flow that mark individual studio work. The 1993 date places it in the strong American studio-pottery era, and the flowing cobalt-over-cream with copper-red or oxblood breaks is a glaze combination widely used by North American studio potters in that period. No pottery stamp, chop, or paper label accompanies the signature, so the maker is not positively identified here.
