LARGE VINTAGE CLEAR GLASS CUBE-PATTERN TORTE / CAKE PLATE - SAWTOOTH SCALLOPED RIM, RAYED CENTER A large low serving plate in heavy clear pressed glass, molded in the well-known three-dimensional cube or "cubist" block pattern with a dramatic upturned sawtooth scalloped rim. The underside center carries a crisp rayed starburst foot ring. A handsome piece for cakes, tortes, sandwiches, cheese, or as a decorative charger. Single plate, sold as one piece. Description Round low torte / cake / sandwich plate in clear pressed glass Measures approximately 12" to 12-1/2" in diameter and stands approximately 2" tall at the peaks of the upturned rim per the tape-measure photos; bidders should verify dimensions from the photographs Field molded in concentric rows of raised three-dimensional cubes / elongated diamond blocks, growing larger toward the rim Rim rises in a pronounced sawtooth or crimped scalloped edge that gives the plate its shallow bowl-like lift Underside center has a molded rayed starburst inside a circular foot ring; the plate rests on that ring, with no separate feet No maker's mark, backstamp, or paper label is present Attribution note The cube motif with sawtooth rim and rayed plate center is the signature of Fostoria's "American" pattern, line No. 2056, catalogued as "Stem 2056, Cube Motif" and produced from 1915 into the 1980s. Fostoria's own pattern reference notes that most American torte plates carry only rays in the plate center, matching this piece. However, the design was widely copied - Jeannette Glass ran a similar Cube pattern from 1929 to 1933 and Indiana Glass produced the comparable Whitehall pattern from the 1950s, later reissued from Fostoria molds as "American Whitehall" by Indiana/Lancaster Colony; collectors distinguish genuine Fostoria by its fire-polished smooth finish, three mold seams, and ground bottom, versus Whitehall's rougher unpolished finish and two seams. Because this plate is unmarked and the finish cannot be judged from photographs alone, no maker attribution is claimed or guaranteed. Bidders who care about a firm Fostoria-versus-Whitehall determination should inspect in person or bid accordingly. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. The plate photographs clean and bright with good clarity and no cloudiness or sickness to the glass. Expect light surface scratching and utensil marks in the well from serving use, and typical pressed-glass mold seams, mold crease lines, and occasional small bubbles, which are normal to manufacture and not considered damage. Sawtooth rim points appear complete in the photographs with no obvious chips or nicks, but sawtooth edges are the most vulnerable area on a plate of this type - bidders should study every photograph closely and satisfy themselves as to condition before bidding.
