Medium: Ink and acrylic on board Date: 1982 Signature: Signed and dated “Ian McKay 1982” lower right Title: The Philosopher at Night Provenance: Collection of Reva Nelson-McKay; Macdonald Stewart Art Centre, Guelph exhibition label verso A striking figurative composition depicting a contemplative male figure dramatically rendered in black, grey and white against an intensely coloured geometric background of cobalt blue and deep red. The work combines airbrushed, almost photographic modelling of the figure with abstracted architectural and organic forms, creating a distinctly theatrical and psychologically charged composition characteristic of early-1980s contemporary Canadian painting. Artist Biography Ian McKay (Canadian, b. 1949) is a Canadian painter and draughtsman associated with the Guelph, Ontario arts community. His work from this period explores figurative imagery through symbolism, myth and psychologically suggestive compositions. McKay received a dedicated exhibition, Ian McKay: Paintings & Drawings, at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre in Guelph in 1982. The accompanying catalogue was authored by McKay with curator Ingrid Jenkner and specifically discussed the importance of myth and symbolism within his practice.
