Artist: Mary Evelyn Wrinch (Canadian, 1877–1969) Title: Stage Proof #1 Medium: Woodblock print on paper Dimensions: Sight 13 × 11 in.; Framed 27 × 23 in. Signature: Signed “M.E. Wrinch” within the image lower right Inscription: Inscribed in pencil “STAGE PROOF #1” beneath the image. An appealing floral woodblock by important Canadian painter and printmaker Mary Evelyn Wrinch, presenting a densely arranged garden of flowering plants rendered through strong, flowing linear forms. Printed predominantly in a warm reddish-brown tone against the light paper, the composition demonstrates Wrinch's accomplished approach to relief printmaking. Of particular interest is the “Stage Proof #1” inscription. Rather than a conventional numbered edition, this indicates an impression produced during a stage in the development of the block or printing process. Such working proofs can offer an interesting view into an artist's printmaking process. Artist Biography Mary Evelyn Wrinch was born in England in 1877 and immigrated to Toronto as a child. She studied at Toronto's Central Ontario School of Art, later continuing her training in London and New York. Wrinch became an accomplished painter and printmaker and was an important participant in Toronto's early professional art community. Her work frequently drew inspiration from Ontario landscapes and botanical subjects, and she became particularly recognized for her distinctive colour block prints.
