A particularly expressive colour aquatint by noted Canadian printmaker Nicholas Hornyansky, depicting an abstracted marsh landscape with tall, weathered bullrushes rising above low bog vegetation. The composition combines black, blue-grey, olive and pale yellow-green passages, with Hornyansky using the granular qualities of aquatint to create an atmospheric, almost dreamlike interpretation of the Canadian landscape. Artist Biography Nicholas Hornyansky (1896–1965) was born in Budapest, Hungary, and began working in his father's printing business as a colour mixer while still a child. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and continued his artistic education in Vienna, Munich, Antwerp and Paris. After working and exhibiting in Europe, Hornyansky immigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled in Toronto. Hornyansky became one of Canada's recognized practitioners of colour aquatint and exhibited with both the Royal Canadian Academy and Ontario Society of Artists. He taught printmaking at the Ontario College of Art and produced numerous Canadian landscapes, architectural subjects and city views. His work is represented in major public collections, and his print Closing Time became the first Canadian print to enter the permanent print collection of the Library of Congress in Washington.
