Artist Biography Marielouise Kreyes (1925–1983) was a Canadian painter born in Lobberich, Germany, who immigrated to Canada in 1951 and became a Canadian citizen in 1957. She studied at the University of Manitoba School of Fine Arts between 1959 and 1963 under distinguished instructors including Richard Williams, George Swinton, and Ivan Eyre, graduating with a diploma in Fine Arts.Kreyes quickly established herself within the Canadian art community through solo exhibitions at Albert White Galleries (Toronto) and Yellow Door Gallery (Winnipeg), while also participating in exhibitions with the Manitoba Society of Artists and the McLaren Acquisition Show. She received the Gold Medal and Grand Prix du Salon International de Vichy (France) and earned an Award in Sculpture from the University of Manitoba during her studies.Although she worked in several media early in her career, Kreyes became best known for her highly detailed acrylic paintings depicting figures in quiet, introspective settings. Influenced by Alex Colville, her compositions combine crisp realism with carefully structured geometry and subtle narrative, exploring themes of solitude, everyday life, and the modern Canadian experience. Her works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, and continue to appear at Canadian fine art auctions.
