This appears to be a commercial contract pattern 1858 conversion Enfield. The top flat of the barrel is stamped BP indicating the Birmingham Proof house. This rifle appears to have been sent to India and later converted to a smoothborerifle with a fixed U notch rear sight. The top flat is also stamped B242, the B indicating the Bombay Presidency Army and 242 indicating the inventory number. The barrel is 35 inches long and the overall length is 52 inches. This rifle displays a rich aged patina with crisp wooden corners and bold stampings. The stock shows handling marks expected of a genuine 19th-century military arm in good condition for its age.
