Title: The Surrealist Studio Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 26 x 16 inches (66 x 40.6 cm) Year: Circa mid-20th century Surrealist period Condition: Good condition. The painted surface presents strong coloration and clearly defined imagery throughout. Minor surface wear, tonal variation, and handling marks consistent with age may be present. The canvas appears stable and display-ready, retaining its detailed composition and overall visual presentation. Presented in an ornate gilt frame. Provenance: From a private American collection. The work was retained in private hands before entering the present consignment. Information concerning its original acquisition and earlier ownership was not supplied. The above provenance reflects the ownership history that accompanied the artwork at the time it was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This complex Surrealist interior brings together an array of unexpected objects and fragmented images. At left, a formally dressed figure wearing a bowler hat has a green apple obscuring his face, while a bird balances above him. An easel supports a painted sky from which a leafy branch and green fruit appear to emerge into the surrounding space. Additional birds move through the cloud-filled background, while a distant bowler-hatted figure crosses a patterned yellow landscape. In the foreground, a clock, detached legs, footwear, a cane, and other studio objects are arranged across a sharply rendered interior. The juxtaposition of ordinary objects, altered scale, and impossible spatial relationships creates an atmosphere of visual paradox and dreamlike uncertainty. Bears an inscription reading “Magritte” near the lower right. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
